Orax - Crash
Orax - Crash
I'm always excited for a new Orax release. He is one of the very first synthwave artists I got into when I first heard Cometa. I'm fan of all his work. I must say, Crash might just be his most experimental work. Then again, Betray was also very experimental. However, where as the latter album was an artist exploring new sounds and trying to see what musical ideas work, the former album is an artist that is already confident with his sonic tools and knows ahead of time which experiments will be a success.
Checkout the guitar riffs on tracks "Crash" and "Black Mustang". They're groovy, catchy, and sexy. I love how Orax applies just enough synthesizer and sax to add spicy flavor to these guitar driven songs. Another successful experiment is the playful, but still dark, vibes on "Chains" and "Complication". The best thing about Orax is his ability to weave dark and yet beautiful melodies using a variety of synth tones, gutiars, and even a sax. These melodies are woven together with groovy rythms to complete a tapestry of sonic bliss. This is most apparent in songs such as "A Giant Puppet" and "Ocean".
The highest achievement on this track list has to be "Miracles". That is one all star track that truly conveys its title. It's an all star tour de force that begins with appears to be a delicate string section. A brief pause, and then the string section continues over a steady for-to-the-floor rythm that continues to enrapture. What sells this track is the sprinkling of melodic fragments of piano, guitar, and soothing synth tones to truly drive the song forward. It's so beautiful it almost makes you weep.
It's amazing how after so many albums, Orax continues to improve. He has a core sound that he continually evolves into something that's equally as impressive as, perhaps even more so, than anything he accomplished previously. Crash is an excellent record and I can only offer a huge recommendation.
