Mid-Life Crisis

I'm Going Through a Mid-life Crisis

I just realized I'm through a mid-life crisis (albeit, prematurely). Now, normally it manifests itself through purchases of fancy (land or water) vehicles. I was never into such things. So, I'm not going to dump $60k on a Corvette (I don't know what they're actually worth). No, my mid-life crisis is manifestly differently, but also typical.

First, I am a musician. I play guitar. So I went out and bought more guitars than I will ever need. I've always been into Jacksons, especially dinkies, so I have quite a few of those. I also have a few Charvels, Schecters, and some old 80s Yamahas. I think my guitar niche is finding inexpensive guitars that are still rare. For instance, I have a very rare Fernandes Revolver that was made back in the 2000s. Fernandes is no longer in business.

I am also into retro-game collecting; specifically Super Nintendo, Sega Dreamcast, and, as of last week, the original XBox. Yes, I am old enough to say that I grew up on those consoles. There is no shortage of hidden gems on each of those consoles that I'm still discovering nearly 30(!) years later. Not to mention the games I missed out on back then.

It's completely crazy how prices have skyrocketed for the Super Nintendo and Dreamcast. I remember purchasing Jet Grind Radio (my absolute favorite on that console and one of my favorites ever) for like fifteen bucks all years ago. It's currently going for damned near eighty dollars! I guess I'm glad I got the jump on many of these games, but it also makes it costly for future purchases. (To my dismay, Power Stone is going for an excess of $100).

Lastly, I joined a heavy metal band. That's one thing I didn't quite get to do as a young lad. Typically, metal is a young person's game; us old heads simply can't headbang and mosh without breaking our backs. Still, I was part of two albums that where released within these last two years. We're currently working on the next one, which will be our best yet.

I have always laughed at people that go through mid-life crises. Hell, I'm laughing at myself right now. However, I totally understand it. When you're young, you're just barely getting started and have not acquired the income, wealth, and purchasing power to get everything you want at the time. Now, you're a mature adult with adult money. And, damn it, you've earned it!

All those hours studying, getting certifications, putting extra time at work, and helping out your community; you deserve some time and cool stuff for yourself. You might look silly driving around in a fancy sports car and never actually race. You may look like a dork when you are pushing 40 and playing Super Mario RPG for the first time (I'm still not a fan of turn-based RPGs). Do it anyways. Don't even have any shame. You busted your tale all these years. Really, you're just having some well earned fun in your own way. Just don't over do it.
