Fixions - Reqiuem for the Serpent's World
Fixions - Requiem for the Serpent's World
It seems as though Fixions gets even more extreme and intense with each release. Some of this stuff is more extreme than even a lot of death and black metal. Much in the same way death metal bands hit you with a barrage of riffs that are constantly changing from one to the next and even evolving within themselves, Fixions does this with synthesizers and electronics. It's nuts.
It's seriously astounding. These aren't just songs with explicit verses and choruses. They are ultra progressive monstrosities that challenge the listener at every opportunity. A variety of cybernetic melodies entangle amongst themselves to create a fiery Gordian Knot that tumbles down the digital path towards electric damnation. What's remarkable is Fixion's ability to maintain this twisted mass of cyberpunk synth riffing under careful control. Like I said: it's nuts.
I will make a complaint here. As amazing and stunningly technical as this is, it does neglect catchiness and memorability at times. This isn't only a problem I have with this album, but with extreme technical metal in general. There's so much focus on creating the most extreme, technical, and intense experience that it slowly decreases the fun factor. Pushing this to its absolute limits creates this whirlwind of sonic attack that exits as immediately as it arrived and fails to leave a lasting impression. Requiem for the Serpents World is nowhere near that limit. It does have its moments of blurred audio instanity that doesn't quite commit to memory. But for every one such moment, there are at least ten moments of lucid, inspired, and unforgettable streams of melody, rythm, and texture that bores itself straight through your skull. Best example is "Path of Akbal". That song is amazing.
I still think Genocity is my favorite Fixions. Mostly because it still has attachment to 80's style synths. Requiem for the Serpent's World takes us pretty far away from 80's retrowave. Perhaps because of that, this hits harder than any other Fixions. Where our cyberpunk noise grinder will take us next will certainly be exciting.
